Boat Towing Weight Calculator

The boat towing weight calculator helps you determine your true Gross Trailer Weight (GTW). Manufacturer "dry weights" are highly deceptive. To safely tow your vessel without damaging your vehicle, you must calculate the combined weight of the boat, trailer, engine, fuel, and gear.

Imperial (Lbs / Gallons) Metric (Kg / Liters)
Calculates fuel weight automatically (~6.1 lbs/gal or ~0.74 kg/L).

Understanding Boat Towing Weights

The biggest mistake new boat owners make is buying a boat based solely on its "dry weight" and assuming their vehicle can tow it. Dry weight is the absolute bare minimum weight of the hull as it leaves the factory—no fuel, no batteries, no safety gear, and often, no outboard motor.

Key Towing Terms Explained

  • Gross Trailer Weight (GTW): The total, fully loaded weight of your trailer and everything on it. This is the number that must not exceed your vehicle's maximum tow rating.
  • Tongue Weight (TW): The downward force that the tongue of the trailer exerts on the hitch of the tow vehicle. For boat trailers, this should ideally be between 5% and 10% of the GTW. Too little tongue weight causes terrifying trailer sway; too much degrades your tow vehicle's steering and braking.
  • Payload Capacity: Don't forget that tongue weight eats directly into your vehicle's payload capacity. If your truck has a payload of 1,500 lbs and your trailer has a 500 lb tongue weight, you only have 1,000 lbs remaining for passengers and gear inside the truck.

The 80% Safety Rule

Towing experts strongly recommend the "80% Rule." You should aim for your calculated Gross Trailer Weight to equal no more than 80% of your vehicle's maximum towing capacity. This leaves a 20% safety margin for steep boat ramps, high winds, heavy braking, and unexpected cargo, preventing your transmission from overheating.
