Volvo Penta Duo Prop Calculator
The Volvo Penta Duo Prop speed calculator helps you estimate your boat's theoretical and actual speed. Duo Props are highly efficient, offering superior grip and lower slip percentages than standard single propellers. Enter your drive data below to calculate performance.
Understanding Volvo Penta Duo Props
Introduced by Volvo Penta in 1982, the Duo Prop (DP) system uses twin counter-rotating propellers on a single drive axis. This design neutralizes the lateral thrust created by single propellers, resulting in improved handling, faster acceleration, and superior top-end efficiency.
Why is Duo Prop Slip Lower?
Propeller "slip" is the difference between actual and theoretical travel distance per revolution. Because the front propeller pushes water directly into the rear counter-rotating propeller, energy that would normally be lost to rotational wash is recaptured.
- Standard Single Props: Typically experience 15% to 20% slip, depending on hull design and load.
- Volvo Penta Duo Props: Grip the water much tighter, generally experiencing only 8% to 12% slip.
Gear Ratios Explained
The gear ratio is how many times the engine turns to turn the propeller shaft once. For example, a 1.95 gear ratio means the engine turns 1.95 times for every 1 revolution of the propellers. Choosing the correct gear ratio and prop set is critical for keeping your engine within its manufacturer-specified Wide Open Throttle (WOT) RPM range.
