Understanding Tennessee Boat Sales Tax Laws

When buying a boat in Tennessee—whether through a licensed marine dealer or a private seller—sales tax must be paid before registering the vessel with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) and the County Clerk.

Tennessee Tax Components Breakdown:

  • State Sales Tax (7%): Tennessee imposes a baseline 7% sales tax on the net purchase price of all vessels and trailers.
  • Local Option Tax (1.5% - 2.75%): Depending on the county or municipality, local option taxes apply, but only to the first $1,600 of the purchase price.
  • State Single Article Tax (2.75%): Tennessee levies an additional state single-article tax on any portion of the purchase price falling between $1,600.01 and $3,200 (max cap of $44.00). Amounts above $3,200 are completely exempt from local option and single article taxes.
  • Trade-In Credit: If you trade in an old boat or trailer when buying a replacement, the trade-in allowance is deducted directly from the gross purchase price prior to tax calculations.
Private Party Purchases: Private sales in Tennessee are subject to the same sales tax rules. The tax is collected by your County Clerk when you apply for titling and registration. Keep a signed Bill of Sale with the purchase price clearly listed.
