What is significant wave height?
Significant wave height, usually written as Hs or Hs, is a standard measure of the overall sea state. When individual wave heights are available, it is defined as the average height of the highest one-third of the waves in a wave record.
It is widely used in oceanography, marine engineering, offshore operations, weather forecasting, and navigation because it provides a useful description of the dominant wave conditions without simply averaging every small and large wave together.
How is significant wave height calculated from measured waves?
First, the individual waves are sorted from largest to smallest. The highest one-third are then selected and their average height is calculated.

What is the spectral formula for significant wave height?
Significant wave height can also be estimated from a wave energy spectrum. When the zeroth spectral moment m₀ is known, a common spectral estimate is:
$$H_s = 4\sqrt{m_0}$$
Here m₀ represents the area under the wave energy spectrum and has units related to wave-surface elevation variance. When m₀ is expressed in m², the resulting significant wave height is in meters.
Why is significant wave height higher than average wave height?
Most real sea states contain many small waves and fewer larger waves. A simple average includes all of them, while significant wave height deliberately focuses on the highest third. It therefore gives a better indication of the larger waves that dominate the visual character and energy of the sea.
How high can individual waves be compared with Hs?
Individual waves can be considerably higher than Hs. A commonly used rule of thumb for a single wave in a sufficiently long wave record is that a large individual wave can approach roughly 1.5 to 2 times Hs, although the actual relationship is statistical and depends on the wave population, observation period, and sea state.
What is a typical significant wave height?
Hs varies enormously depending on location and weather. A value of 0.5 m represents a relatively small sea state, while values of several meters indicate much rougher conditions. Offshore storms can produce much larger significant wave heights.
Why is Hs important for boats and ships?
Significant wave height is useful for estimating how severe sea conditions may be for vessels, offshore structures, ports, and marine operations. It can help sailors interpret marine forecasts and compare conditions between different locations or time periods.
Is significant wave height the same as the largest wave?
No. Hs is a statistical description of a wave population. It is not the maximum observed wave. A sea state with an Hs of 3 m can contain individual waves that are substantially taller than 3 m.
