Understanding Sailing Handicaps
                Unlike one-design racing where the first boat across the line wins, mixed-fleet racing requires a handicap system to level the playing field between boats of different sizes, weights, and sail areas. The two most common systems function slightly differently:
            
1. PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet)
                Predominantly used in North America for keelboats. PHRF is usually a Time-on-Distance (ToD) system. A boat's rating is expressed in seconds per nautical mile. A faster boat has a lower rating (sometimes even negative), and a slower boat has a higher rating. The formula subtracts (Rating × Distance) from the elapsed time.
            
2. Portsmouth Yardstick (PY)
                Commonly used for dinghies and smaller multihulls internationally. The Portsmouth system is a Time-on-Time system, meaning it does not rely on measuring the exact distance of the race course. The elapsed time is multiplied by 1000 and divided by the boat's PY rating number.
            
                Pro Tip: "Elapsed Time" is the actual real-world time it took you to complete the course. "Corrected Time" is the adjusted time used by the race committee to determine the final standings.
