The Sail Area to Displacement (SA/D) ratio calculator helps sailors evaluate a sailboat's performance characteristics. It measures how much power (sail area) the boat has relative to its weight (displacement), giving you a clear indicator of whether a boat is a heavy cruiser, a balanced coastal cruiser, or a high-performance racer.
Understanding the SA/D Ratio
The Sail Area to Displacement ratio is a dimensionless number that naval architects use to compare the relative sail power of different boats, independent of their overall size. The higher the number, the more sail area the boat carries relative to its weight, generally indicating higher speeds but requiring more attentive sail management.
Common SA/D Categories
- Under 15 (Heavy Cruisers / Motor Sailers): Very stable, sea-kindly boats designed for harsh ocean conditions. They carry less sail power and typically require strong winds to move at hull speed.
- 15 to 19 (Coastal / Offshore Cruisers): The "sweet spot" for most cruising sailboats. These vessels offer a solid balance between good light-air performance and heavy-weather safety.
- 20 to 24 (Racing / High Performance Cruisers): Fast, responsive boats designed for performance. They perform excellently in light winds but require the crew to reef the sails earlier as wind speeds increase.
- 24 and Over (Extreme Racing): Skiffs, sport boats, and grand prix racers. These boats have massive rigs relative to their ultra-light weight and demand highly skilled, active crews to keep them upright.
How is it calculated?
The math compares a two-dimensional metric (Sail Area) against a three-dimensional metric (Displacement). To make them comparable, the displacement is first converted to volume based on the density of seawater (64 lbs/ft3 or 1025 kg/m3), and then taken to the 2/3 power to convert that volume back into a two-dimensional figure.
