How the Pontoon HP Estimate Works

The calculator uses a simplified performance relationship calibrated for real-world pontoon and tritoon boats. It is intended as a planning estimate, not as a substitute for the manufacturer's horsepower rating.

1. Estimate operating weight

We start with dry boat weight and add a percentage of the manufacturer's person/motor/gear capacity.

Loaded Weight = Dry Weight + (Capacity × Load Factor)

2. Adjust for boat length

Larger boats do not behave exactly like smaller boats at the same horsepower-to-weight ratio, so the model includes a length adjustment.

3. Estimate horsepower for the target speed

HP = Loaded Weight × (Target Speed ÷ Effective C)2

The raw result is rounded to a common marine engine size and a planning range is shown around it. Actual performance varies with hull design, pontoon diameter, propeller, engine setup, water conditions, altitude, passenger loading and other factors.
