What is a boat slip size?
A boat slip is a designated space where a boat can be stored at a dock or marina. The slip needs to be large enough for the boat to fit while leaving enough clearance for docking, fenders, dock structures, wind, current, and normal movement.
A boat's length and beam alone do not necessarily define the appropriate slip size. Some additional clearance is normally needed around the boat.
How do you calculate boat slip size?
A simple planning calculation adds the desired clearances to the boat's effective length and width.

$$Slip\ Width = Boat\ Beam + 2 \times Side\ Clearance$$
If permanent equipment extends beyond the hull, include that equipment in the effective boat dimensions before adding clearance.
How much bigger should a boat slip be than the boat?
There is no single clearance value suitable for every marina. Required space depends on dock layout, pilings, fenders, wind, current, water-level changes, and how the boat is secured.

How do you calculate slip width?
Slip width is based on the boat's maximum effective beam plus the desired clearance on both sides.

When equal side clearance is used:
$$Slip\ Width = Effective\ Beam + 2C$$
How do you calculate slip length?
Slip length is the boat's effective length plus the required space at the bow and stern.

Should boat length include a swim platform?
A fixed swim platform can extend beyond the nominal hull and may need to be considered when determining the actual occupied space in the slip.
The same applies to a bow pulpit, anchor platform, davit, dinghy arrangement, or another permanent structure that extends beyond the main hull.
Should boat beam include side equipment?
Yes, when the equipment is permanently installed and affects the actual width required to fit into the slip. Examples can include fixed rails, side platforms, rub rails, or other protrusions.
What is a finger-pier slip?
A finger-pier slip has a walkway or dock section extending alongside the boat. This can make boarding easier and can affect how the available width and clearance are used.
The physical dimensions of the actual slip still need to accommodate the boat and the dock structures.
What is a double-wide boat slip?
A double-wide or shared slip provides substantially more width than a standard single slip. It may be used for a wide boat, multiple smaller boats, or boats that need additional maneuvering space.
The required dimensions depend on the marina's layout and how the space is intended to be used.
Does boat beam equal slip width?
No. The beam is the boat's maximum width, while slip width is the available space required to contain the boat plus clearance.

Why is clearance important when choosing a slip?
A boat does not remain perfectly centered and motionless in a slip. Wind, waves, current, fenders, dock lines, tide, and normal docking movement can cause the boat to shift.
A slip that is exactly the same width as the boat's beam provides no practical room for these movements.
How does water level affect boat slip requirements?
Water level changes can affect draft and the relative position of the boat to docks, pilings, lift structures, and other underwater or floating obstacles.
Locations with substantial tidal changes may need additional consideration beyond a simple length-and-width calculation.
How does boat draft affect slip size?
Draft does not normally change the horizontal dimensions of the slip, but it is important for determining whether there is enough water depth inside the slip.
A properly sized slip can still be unsuitable if the water is too shallow for the boat's draft.

Example boat slip calculation
Suppose a boat is 25 ft long and has an 8.5 ft beam. You want 3 ft of bow clearance, 2 ft of stern clearance, and 1.5 ft of clearance on each side.
$$Slip\ Length = 25 + 3 + 2 = 30\ ft$$
$$Slip\ Width = 8.5 + 2(1.5) = 11.5\ ft$$
The planning result is therefore approximately a 30 ft × 11.5 ft slip.
Can a boat fit in a slip that is the same length as the boat?
A boat with exactly the same length as the slip leaves no room at the bow or stern. That can make docking difficult and may leave little room for lines, fenders, platforms, and movement.
The required additional length depends on the marina's docking arrangement and the clearance required around the particular boat.
Can a boat fit in a slip that is the same width as the boat?
A slip that is exactly the same width as the boat's beam provides essentially no side clearance. This is generally not a practical planning assumption for normal docking.
