Understanding Boat Travel Times

Calculating travel time on the water is very different from driving on a highway. On land, you can often maintain a constant speed for hours. On the water, variables like wind, tide, currents, and no-wake zones constantly disrupt your average speed.

Nautical Miles vs. Statute Miles

Ensure you are using the correct unit of measurement. A Statute Mile is the standard measurement used on land (5,280 feet). A Nautical Mile (NM) is based on the circumference of the earth and is slightly longer (6,076 feet). Because marine charts and GPS systems use nautical miles, boat speeds are generally measured in Knots (1 Knot = 1 Nautical Mile per hour).

Why You Need a Delay Margin

If your destination is 20 miles away and your boat cruises at 20 MPH, the math says it will take exactly 1 hour. However, in the real world, a boat rarely maintains a perfect top speed from point A to point B.

  • No-Wake Zones: Channels, marinas, and bridges require you to idle, which drastically drops your average speed.
  • Currents and Tides: Cruising against a 2-knot current will subtract 2 knots from your actual speed over ground (SOG).
  • Weather Conditions: Heavy chop or strong headwinds will force you to throttle back for a safer, more comfortable ride.

The 1/3 Rule for Fuel Planning

Always pair your time estimation with proper fuel management. The US Coast Guard recommends the 1/3 rule: use one-third of your fuel to get to your destination, one-third to get back, and keep one-third in reserve for emergencies or unexpected delays.
