Why Axle Placement Matters

Correctly positioning your trailer's axle assembly ensures that the total weight of your boat and trailer is correctly split between the trailer's tires and your vehicle's hitch ball. Getting this wrong can severely compromise road safety and vehicle handling.

Rules of Thumb for Trailer Rigging:

  • The 60/40 Rule: Standard boat trailers are designed so that roughly 60% of the frame length (and load weight) sits forward of the axle centerline, and 40% sits behind it.
  • Target Tongue Weight: Your target hitch tongue weight should equal 7% to 12% of the total loaded trailer weight (boat + motor + trailer + fuel).
  • Too Far Back (Excessive Tongue Weight): If the axles are too far rearward, excess load presses down on the tow vehicle's rear bumper, lifting the front steering tires and causing poor braking and control.
  • Too Far Forward (Insufficient Tongue Weight): If the axles are placed too close to the front, the tongue weight drops below 5%. This triggers violent trailer sway at speeds above 45 mph.
Pro Tip: Always measure axle position from the center of the trailer's coupler hitch socket to the center point between the axle springs. For tandem setup, measure to the exact midpoint between the two tires.
