Understanding Boat Registration & Licensing

Most state agencies and international maritime authorities require motorized vessels and larger non-motorized craft to be officially registered before operating on public waters. Registration fees help fund local waterway safety, law enforcement, ramp maintenance, and environmental conservation projects.

How Registration Fees Are Calculated:

  • Length Classification: Vessels are typically divided into size tiers (e.g., Class A: under 16 ft, Class 1: 16–26 ft, Class 2: 26–40 ft, Class 3: 40+ ft). Larger boats incur higher registration rates.
  • Engine Surcharges: High-horsepower outboards, inboards, or personal watercraft (PWCs) often incur additional aquatic invasive species (AIS) or motorized safety surcharges.
  • State Title & Administrative Fees: Initial registrations usually require a title certificate fee, duplicate decal fee, or processing charge in addition to base registration fees.
  • State Registration vs. Federal USCG Documentation: Vessels 5 net tons or greater (roughly 27 ft and above) have the option to be US Coast Guard Documented instead of state-titled, though state registration decals may still apply depending on homeport rules.
Pro Tip: Keep your registration card aboard your vessel at all times during operation, and ensure your registration numbers and expiration decals are applied according to state formatting rules (usually 3-inch block letters on both sides of the forward bow).
