Understanding Boat Gear Ratios & Performance
A vessel's gear ratio defines how many times the engine's crankshaft turns relative to a single full rotation of the propeller shaft. Matching the proper gear reduction with prop pitch ensures your engine runs within its manufacturer-recommended WOT (Wide Open Throttle) RPM range.

- Gear Ratio: Stated as a ratio like 2.00:1 (or simply 2.0). A 2.0 gear ratio means the engine turns twice to rotate the propeller once. Higher ratios (e.g., 2.33:1) are designed for heavy loads or smaller engines, while lower ratios (e.g., 1.50:1) suit lightweight, high-speed hulls.
- Propeller Pitch: Pitch is the theoretical distance in inches or centimeters a propeller moves forward through a solid medium during one 360° rotation.
