Why calculate boat crew weight?
Crew is a significant part of a boat's payload. The combined weight of everyone aboard affects the vessel's total displacement and can influence trim, freeboard, performance, and stability.
A simple crew-weight calculation is useful when estimating a boat's loaded condition, comparing different crew sizes, or checking how much payload remains after people and their equipment are included.
How is total crew weight calculated?
When an average crew weight is used, total crew weight is simply the number of people multiplied by the assumed average weight per person.

How is crew weight calculated when everyone's weight is different?
When individual weights are available, the total is the sum of all individual crew member weights.

What average crew weight should be used?
The appropriate assumed weight depends on the purpose of the calculation. A planning estimate can use an average passenger or crew weight, but a vessel loading calculation should use the loading assumptions required by the relevant boat specification, regulation, or stability standard.
For accurate weight-and-balance work, using the actual people and their carried gear provides a better estimate than relying only on an average.
Should clothing and personal gear be included?
Crew weight alone does not necessarily represent the complete load created by people on a boat. Clothing, life jackets, backpacks, food, water, luggage, diving equipment, fishing equipment, and other personal gear can add significant weight.
For a real loading calculation, these additional items should be included as separate weights rather than hidden inside the crew figure unless the chosen loading convention specifically includes them.
How does crew weight affect boat performance?
Additional crew weight increases displacement. Depending on the hull, this can increase draft and resistance and can change acceleration, cruising speed, sailing performance, and fuel consumption.
Does crew weight affect stability?
Yes. The effect depends not only on how much the crew weighs but also on where the crew is located. Crew standing or moving to a high or outboard position can have a much greater stability effect than the same weight positioned low and near the centerline.
Why is crew position important?
A center-of-gravity calculation uses both weight and position. Two crews with exactly the same total weight can produce different loading conditions if one group is positioned differently along the boat or at a different height above the baseline.

Can this calculator determine the boat's passenger capacity?
No. Passenger capacity is not determined by crew weight alone. Maximum persons and payload depend on the vessel's design, buoyancy, stability, freeboard, structure, applicable regulations, and the manufacturer's certified capacity.
